It is incredible to be be a part of one of the most intimate moments of a couple’s life. The birth of your child is a moment that can sometimes be forgotten because of all the intense feelings and emotions that surround it. I am thankful that through my work I have ended up at this place. Making memories and capturing once in a life time moments is part of what drew me to photography, but the feeling that I get when I am in a room with a birthing mother is like nothing else. To be able to convey the beauty and strength of this moment to other women of the world that may have fears surrounding birth is something that I am very passionate about.
I attended this birth somewhat last minute as I was backing up another birth photographer, so the day I met Courtney & Jon was the same day their baby girl came into the world. I arrived at 3:00pm and we had about 2 hours to get to know each other while her body found its rhythm. Courtney’s contractions were picking up quite quickly and by about 5:30 she was entering the stage of active labour. Their midwife, Caroline, arrived just after 6pm and her energy was very calming and supportive. When Courtney started feeling the urge to push, it only took a few strong surges and baby Kailey was earth side- placed on the chest of her mother where she heard the beat of her momma’s heart from the outside for the first time. It all happened so fast that we were scrambling to find the phone to call the nurse back into the room. She literally made it in with a few seconds to spare. I spent about another hour or so documenting some sweet moments between mom, dad & Kailey while they took it all in and enjoyed getting to know their new daughter. The next morning I went back to capture big sister Trinity and big brother Linden meeting the tiny addition to this sweet family of 5.
Thank you Courtney & Jon for welcoming me into this private moment, those three beautiful children are so lucky to have to you as their parents. xx
